Where to Find Beyond Meat Products and Is It Really Healthier?

Where to Find Beyond Meat Products and Is It Really Healthier?

Vegetarians and vegans now have a meat alternative to enjoy amongst their meat-eating family and friends. The Beyond Meat initiative comes as a result from the many articles and documentaries discussing the impact the meat industry has on the earth and on the animals. Documentaries such as Cowspiracy, Food Inc., and What the Health available on the popular streaming service, Netflix, caused a stir amongst the audience and opened the meatless alternatives industry.

The Beyond Meat Boom

In 2016, Beyond Meat was conceptualized and began the task of creating a plant-based meatless alternative that mimics the taste and look of actual beef. With base ingredients such as plant proteins, Beyond Meat created their now popular Beyond Burgers.

Its initial roll-out began as a partnership with A&W and resulted in a stock shortage from the high demand. This demand shows that there is a market for meatless alternatives and that people are looking for a way to avoid the meat industry. So soon afterwards, Beyond Meat introduced more plant-based products sold in various grocery stores and additional fast-food restaurants.

Beyond Meat products provided more vegetarian fast-food options as the company began expanding their products from patties to sausages and “meat” crumbles that are now available in grocery stores and fast food restaurants in America such as:

Grocery stores:

  • Safeway
  • Target
  • Publix
  • Shoprite
  • Giant
  • Sprouts
  • Meijer
  • Harris Teeter
  • Whole Foods

Fast-food restaurants:

  • TGI Fridays
  • Carl’s Jr.
  • Veggie Grill
  • A&W
  • Bareburger
  • Burger FI
  • Del Taco
  • Dunkin Donuts

The Healthier Option?

Beyond Meat claims that their product is the healthier and eco-friendly option to real meat that will have a positive impact on the earth, unlike the meat industry that damages land, pollutes the air with methane, and arguably abuses the animals slaughtered for their products.

Nutrition experts stay wary of the “improved” health benefits Beyond Meat claim to have. Beyond Meat products are highly-processed ingredients such as coconut oil, pea protein isolate and flavoring to mimic the taste and texture of real meat products. Food experts advise consumers to avoid highly-processed foods and say that Beyond Burger is not healthier when compared to a real one due to its ingredients.

Although it may not be as healthy as consumers expect it to be, it does have more benefits over real meat. The transition to plant-based meat products helps consumers avoid red meat, which is the ultimate detriment to health as consumption leads to cancer and heart disease. There is also the ethical component to plant-based products. As the meatless alternatives industry continues to grow, there will be less demand for red meat products and therefore diminishes the negative effects to the earth that the meat industry creates. In theory, when consumers switch to a plant-based diet, it is the equivalent of taking 12 million cars off the road.

The Future of Meat

Though health experts have their reservations about Beyond Meat products, they do acknowledge that it is a step towards the right direction. As the industry continues to explode, people’s palettes can adjust to not having meat and recipes can be refined with healthier ingredients.

Holiday Season Hosting Tips: How to Throw a Grown-Up Dinner Party

Holiday Season Hosting Tips: How to Throw a Grown-Up Dinner Party

As the youngest millennials start to make their way out of the nest, many of them probably struggle to do “adult” stuff for the first time. This includes making their own appointments, buying their own groceries that don’t just consist of instant noodles or toast, budgeting, and hosting events at home other than the ones that are just music, alcohol, and snacks.

Hosting your own dinner party can seem like a stressful feat with everything that needs to be considered, but giving yourself time and taking things step-by-step can help relieve the stress and make you feel like you have everything under control.

How to Host a Holiday Party

Getting started, you should consider:

The number of guests

If this is your first party as a host, you can start small with a party of four or six of your friends who know each other to keep things from getting awkward over an intimate dinner.

When to have dinner

You want to invite your guests at least two weeks before so they can mark it in their calendars. A week before the dinner, you can send a reminder.

The decorations

Figure out if you want a specific holiday theme or just buy whatever you think looks good and cute to decorate your home. Jingle bells, mistletoe, wreaths, fake snow, go all out! Make it real fancy with an on-theme tablecloth and table sets.

The menu

The easiest way to get dinner is to have a pot luck! That means you only have to worry about one main dish along with the snacks, drinks, and dessert. Or make your own menu of what you want your guests to eat; it’s your party anyways!

Invite your guests.

Send out the invitations and get feedback on an agreed date.

Get everything you need.

Make a list of decorations and ingredients you need a few days before the dinner so when you begin your prep, you’ll have time to run and grab anything you forgot.

Clean up.

Try to clear the areas where your guests will spend most of the time – kitchen, dining room, living room, washroom.

Set-up.

The night before, prep all of your ingredients in pre-measured containers that you can place around your cooking station to save time. Then set up a drink station with cups, ice, a market, and the drinks somewhere it won’t get crowded. Put snack bowls in your kitchen close enough to your station, but far enough that your guests won’t get in the way.

Relax and mingle.

As dinner cooks or as you set up the table, enjoy conversation with your guests or give them small tasks to help you get everything done.

Say goodnight and clean up.

After dessert and a nightcap, you can start to load the dishwasher or the sink and start tidying as your guests help or leave for the night.

If you’re worried about getting overwhelmed, you can always ask your friends to help with the small stuff!

Learn How to Make a Budget for That Vacation You Want

Learn How to Make a Budget for That Vacation You Want

In a perfect world, we’d all be financially stable and wouldn’t have to do mental math or look at price tags while spending money. Alas, we live in a timeline where currently most of the money in the world belongs to the one percent and the rest struggle with an income that never seems to spread far enough each month. But who wants to set aside time to look over all of their expenses and allocate each dollar to a certain category? (About 1 out of 3 Americans do and live by a strict budget.)

Why Are You Making a Budget?

A budget is a plan on how you will be spending your money and helps you develop good spending habits and use money responsibly. The first step to creating a budget must be determining why you are making a budget. This will set you on track to follow through with your budget and have goals to achieve. Plus, rather than worrying about your financial status, you can have the assurance that you, 1) have enough money, and 2) you’re not spending what you don’t have.

A Guide to Budgeting

There’s no reason not to be able to learn how to budget since there are numerous resources accessible online and many apps you can download to track your spending for you. These tools do the work for you, but in order to continue to follow your budget, you should always focus on why you are allocating money – reducing worrying and spending better.

1.    Review Your Current Spending

Get a good idea where your money is currently going by reviewing bank statements that show where and how much you’re spending. From there you can determine how to categorize payments and find any problem areas to reduce your expenses in that category and add to categories that need more.

2.    Determine Your Budget Type

The 0-based budget is a spending plan where every dollar is allocated to its appropriate category with nothing left over for the month. This plan is more restrictive and requires more disciplined spending habits.

Over time you can switch to the more popular budget type, the 50-30-20 budget, with 50% of your income going towards your needs like rent, mortgage, food, 30% for anything you want, and 20% that goes towards your savings.

3.    Keep Yourself Accountable

The most difficult part of making a budget is tracking your spending manually. But of course, in this day and age technology, there are both free and paid apps for that. These apps can notify you when you’ve reached your spending limits and show how much more you have to spend.

You can also try the cash method where you put money in an envelope dedicated to each category, then when you empty an envelope, you know that you can’t spend anymore.

With your new spending habits, you can learn where you can spend less and save more to meet your goals.

Compare and Choose the Right Personal Audio

Compare and Choose the Right Personal Audio

Noise cancelling technology is used to reduce unwanted background sound. Unlike regular headphones and earbuds that passively block outside noise, noise cancelling headphones actively reduce the unwanted sound by adding a second sound designed to cancel the first.

People find the technology helpful for travel, so they can sleep on a noisy airplane or they can improve their concentration when placed in an environment that has distracting activity going on.

This technology can be delivered in a variety of forms. We’ve made a list of headphones, earphones and earbuds to help you compare:

Over-ear Headphones

Over-ear headphones are the most comfortable headphones, with the capability of delivering the best, most hi-fidelity sound. Not as compact as in-ear or on-ear, they are still compact enough to travel with. These headphones are good for when you need to concentrate and hear exactly what you need to hear, because they provide isolation from the environment.

The most comfortable ones will have a thick, padded headband that distributes the extra weight evenly over the top of your head. They provide the most consistent and best possible sound.

On-Ear Headphones

These headphones can be made of lightweight materials and are more portable than over-ear headphones. They don’t completely cut you off from the environment because they rest on the ears and don’t completely cover them.

They are more comfortable than in-ear models, and can be worn for longer periods of time without discomfort than the heavier over ear models.

The difference between earphones (also called in-ear headphones) and earbuds is that earphones are inserted into the ear canal, while earbuds rest outside the ear canal.

Earphones

The primary selling point of earphones is their portability. They can fit right in your pocket, making them ideal for travel.

No fancy noise cancellation technology is needed. When the earphone is inserted into the ear canal, it blocks noise from getting in.

Insertion into the ear canal can mean discomfort, especially for those with sensitive ears. It also means that they can’t be worn for long periods of time because they become too uncomfortable after a while.

The sound you get is as good as any on-ear or over-ear headphones, though some models can be fussy and won’t give the best sound unless they are inserted properly. The sound they produce can be precise, because there is no concern over outside noise because they are so good at blocking outside noise.

Earbuds

Apple EarPods are earbuds that are comfortable, but have a one-size-fits-all design. Because of this, the fit isn’t always stable, and they are prone to falling out of the ear when running or exercising, for example.

They are lightweight and portable enough to fit into most pockets. The EarPod is a little less durable than other models due to a thin audio cable.

The sound is adequate for most genres of music, but there is difficulty with some of the more bass centric music genres like hip-hop.

It has never been easier to find an audio product to meet your needs!

Seven Easy Ways to Save on a Caribbean Winter Vacation

Seven Easy Ways to Save on a Caribbean Winter Vacation

When the weather gets colder, the Snowbirds begin to dream of a winter vacation on a Caribbean beach.

A winter getaway doesn’t have to break the bank! We’ve looked at the part of a vacation that can eat up most of your budget – accommodations and meals.

Here’s how to save on that Caribbean winter getaway you’ve been dreaming about:

1. Know What’s Included in Your All Inclusive

All-inclusives can be a way to save money if what you want is matched by what they are offering. For example, if a resort offers a water sport you like as part of the fee, then it is worthwhile. But if you want tours and they aren’t covered, it may cost you more than the savings of being at an all-inclusive.

Be aware that not every single expense may be covered.

2. Book a Rental

If you are going with a group, why not rent a villa? That way you can split the costs. Also, renting a house let’s you save by cooking your own meals.

3. Stay Off the Beaten Path

Stay at a hotel or resort that isn’t right on the beach, but close. If you do stay at a place on the beach, take a room on the opposite side of the hotel. Consider how much you will be in your room. Will you really miss the view? Choosing to stay somewhere that isn’t first choice will save you a lot of money.

4. Stay at a Specialty Resort

Save money by staying at a place that caters to special interest and offers packages that include accommodations. For example, a resort dedicated to diving can offer lower accommodation prices because they usually have their own boats and equipment and can offer meal and dive packages.

5. Choose the Right Meal Plan

Many hotels offer meal plans, but consider what you need. Usually, there is a European Plan where no meals are included, the Continental Plan, which includes breakfast only and the American Plan which includes all three meals, and the Modified American Plan, with breakfast and dinner.

If you’re going to be away from the hotel all day sightseeing, then the three meal plan is a waste of money. If you plan to check out the local cuisine and go to restaurants, you may only want breakfast.

6. Take a Cue from the Locals

The locals know where the good food is, so go where they go. You will get more authentic local cuisine, and it will almost always be cheaper. Try the street food to get a taste of culture. If you’re not sure about food safety, ask at the hotel front desk. They would know if a place should be avoided.

7. Prepare Your Own Food

Go to the grocery store, or to any of the markets you find. Be adventurous and try a fruit or vegetable you aren’t familiar with. If you don’t have a place to cook, stock up on provisions and make snacks.

Enjoy saving on your winter getaway!

Holiday Budgeting Made Simple: Focus and Stick to Your List!

Holiday Budgeting Made Simple: Focus and Stick to Your List!

Sales, sales, and more sales. The holidays seem like a never-ending time of spending money on gifts, trips, and food. With Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Boxing Day, it’s as if there’s a discount on every hot ticket item and you just need to get it because of how much you would save. Nobody’s perfect and may stray from their budget or may spend just a little, or a lot, over what they can afford. But not today, capitalism! This year, protect your bank account and your future self with these money saving tips!

Holiday Budgeting Tips

Set a limit

A quick or thorough review of your current expenses and payments will give you an idea of how much you have to spend on the holidays. This amount will keep you in check while shopping so you can rethink big purchases that can eat most of your available funds. Shopping and hoping you stay under a reasonable limit may not be as successful as having a specific total to stop you from any future money problems.

Cash is king.

Automatic taps, auto-fill forms, and pre-set-up card information makes overspending dangerously easy especially when you can see a “What You Save” amount in your online cart. You may have saved a lot, but you may have spent a lot too. Shopping cash-only easily stops you from spending more because once it’s physically out of your hands, you’re done!

Also, if you’re the type of who wonders who even carries cash anymore, after paying, just subtract the total from your budget and don’t go over the amount you have left!

Do your research.

Impulse buying can be tricky to avoid. All of the “BIG SAVINGS” or “STOREWIDE SALE” signs and e-mails, will make you think that you’re getting the best price. But sometimes, different retailers will have better holiday deals on the same product. Before you buy something, make sure to check around other sites or stores to make sure you’re getting the best deal.

Stick to a list.

It’s easy to veer off course shopping. The display in the store can catch your eye or another sale notification shows up on the website. Stay focused by writing a list of items that you want within your budget and don’t stray from it. If you have any leftover funds, you can return to any items not on your list if you really want it.

Keep note of all of your transactions.

Charging your credit card or handing over a few bills makes it easy to forget what you’re spending because you’re excited about all the new items you’re going to get. But after a transaction, keep a note of how much you spend so that you can watch the amount grow and warn yourself that you’re entering dangerous overspending territory.

There Will Be More Sales

Don’t let the fear of missing out make you overspend on extra items. Remember that next year, there will always be new products and new deals for you to save money!

Exciting Home Entertainment Technology Coming in 2020

2020 is shaping up to be an exciting year for consumers, with several advancements in entertainment technology set to take over our living rooms. Whether you’re a videophile, an audiophile, or an avid video gamer, you should keep your wallet on standby for the following technology:

LG’s C-Series OLED TVs

If you’re looking for the best television technology that money can buy, then look no further than LG’s OLED C-Series. At a width of less than 0.1 inches, these gorgeous looking TVs are impressively slim and come in a stylish form factor with a gunmetal finish.

They are loaded with exciting features such as Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, webOS 4.0, smart-TV options, excellent sound quality, and cutting-edge connectivity that makes them futureproof for next-generation gaming consoles. They also boast a good refresh rate for discerning video gamers who enjoy fast-paced first-person shooter titles.

But the most impressive feature by far is the best-in-class display. The OLED panel features jaw-droppingly vibrant colors, top-of-the-line HDR, and the deepest blacks, which allows the TVs to display shadows in excellent detail. The picture quality is only enhanced by the processor. It reduces noise and keeps brightness consistent at different times of the day.

On paper, LG’s C-Series TVs aren’t as bright as Samsung’s LCD TVs. This is because LCD panels are naturally brighter due to their backlight illumination. However, this matters less in terms of real-world performance. The biggest drawback of buying an LG C-Series TV is that they’re significantly more expensive than the competition.

LG has kept a tight lid on the advancements these TVs will offer in 2020. However, leaked documents suggest that their next-generation OLED TVs will be brighter and even better looking, with curved edge displays and smaller bezels. Moreover, LG is reportedly investing further in OLED manufacturing in Chinese factories. Insiders speculate that this could help the South Korean technology giant slash TV prices next year.

Sony’s PlayStation 5 vs. Microsoft’s Xbox Scarlett

There are many reasons why Sony’s PlayStation 4 won the console war, easily outselling Microsoft’s Xbox One. While the PS4 offered several critically acclaimed exclusive titles, many of Xbox One’s exclusive titles could also be played on the PC.

Gamers also seemingly preferred PS4’s interface, Sony’s ecosystem, and the familiar ergonomic design of the DualShock4 controller. More importantly, the PS4 debuted earlier and had a smoother launch.

By contrast, the Xbox One had a less than ideal start with its mandatory check-ins, shaky software, and the forced inclusion of the Kinect. Not only was the motion-sensing hardware not ready for primetime, but it significantly raised the price of the console.

While Sony hit the ground running, Microsoft was still finding its feet. Although both next-generation consoles seem to have similar specs – the PS5 is rumored to be a little faster.

The PS5 is said to have an 8-Core AMD Ryzen Zen 2 CPU, an AMD Radeon Navi GPU, a 4K Blu-ray optical drive, 8K output resolution, a frame rate of 120fps, VR support, and backwards compatibility with PS4 games. Meanwhile, the Xbox Scarlett is reported to have a 1.6GHz AMD Ryzen Zen 2 CPU, an AMD Arcturus GPU, 16GB of GDDR6 SDRAM, 1TB of SSD storage, 8K output resolution, a frame rate of 120fps, and backwards compatibility with Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One games.

As always, the console war will be decided by the price and the quality of exclusive games. But Microsoft faces an uphill battle. They should pray that the PS5 stutters on debut, while their console doesn’t suffer from nerve wracking issues like the Red Ring of Death. Even if both consoles are similarly priced and launch without problems, gamers will likely stick with what’s familiar. As things stand now, Microsoft must pull a rabbit out of its hat to win the next console war.

VR Technology

When VR technology launched in the shape of the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive, critics hailed it as the new frontier of gaming. Virtual reality games provided gamers with an enthralling level of immersion that they had never felt before. And certain lonely adults were especially excited for a chance to immerse themselves in ‘nature videos’.

Unfortunately, neither the Oculus Rift nor the HTC Vive caught the public’s imagination. Both struggled to sell more than half a million units combined. This was despite being the best-reviewed VR devices.

On the other hand, the Sony PlayStation VR, Nintendo Labo VR Kit, and Samsung’s Gear VR sold better. This is because they provided a decent VR experience while being cheaper. What’s more, gamers reportedly felt less motion sickness with them than they did with the Oculus Rift or the HTC Vive.

HTC and Oculus VR are reportedly making some changes to their next generation devices in 2020. Both companies are looking to sell their VR technology at lower prices. Unfortunately, the lower price will come at the cost of weaker hardware.

Although these changes may encourage consumers to buy more Oculus Rifts and HTC Vives, both devices will still require powerful computer hardware and a lot of real estate in the living room to function.

On the other hand, Sony seems to be making all the right moves with its newest version of PlayStation VR. Set to launch alongside the PS5 in 2020 during the holiday season, the technology is rumored to feature several upgrades.

Not only will the PlayStation VR2 feature improved VR tech, but it could include several more built-in cameras. These cameras may allow fans to experience games in augmented reality (AR). In simple terms, the rumored AR could allow you to beam parts of games into your living room, Star Trek style. Another rumor claims that the PlayStation VR2 will have a ‘Transparent Mode’. This will allow users to see their surroundings in AR while wearing the headset.

These are some exciting pieces of home entertainment technology that we can’t wait to see. There seems to be something for every geek in 2020.

Gear You Need for Travel

Travelling with the right quality gear makes everything easier and more enjoyable.

Here are seven travel items you need that are useful and easy to transport:

1. Portable Charger

Portable chargers, or power banks, give you the power you need, all in handheld devices that hold a big battery. Use them to charge your phone or other electronics.

With a portable charger you don’t have to look around the airport to find places to plug in and hang around the plug while your devices charge.

Features to look for: multiple ports, battery size and high-speed charging.

2. Universal Travel Adapter

It is better to invest in a universal travel adapter than to be stuck at an airport having to buy one. Anything you have to buy at the airport is over priced, and the adapters they sell often don’t protect your electronics. Also, an adapter is no larger than an iPhone so it is not inconvenient to carry one. You won’t regret buying one and bringing it on your travels.

Look for one that converts voltages and allows you to charge multiple devices.

3. Skyroam Solis Portable WiFi Hotspot

This app allows you to have a portable WiFi hotspot that supplies secure mobile WiFi. There are no SIMs or configuration needed. And no expensive roaming fees! Just unlimited data and fast connection across more than 130 countries.

4. Wireless Headphones

Headphones are a must for travel, and it has never been easier to use them. Headphones are now so compact that they can be packed and transported easily, and the wireless feature means that they don’t have wire that get all tangled up. They can provide entertainment by allowing you to listen to music, or to binge-watch movies.

Headphones will stop your flight neighbours from starting small talk, so if you want to be left alone, put on your headphones!

5. Tablet and Bluetooth Keyboard

Laptops aren’t the best choice for travel. They are big and heavy and there is always the worry that the battery will run out. A better travel choice is a tablet. A Bluetooth or USB keyboard makes it easier to type and use a tablet.

6. Kindle

Travel involves a lot of waiting and sitting around. That means you need some way to entertain yourself, and so you need a Kindle, or an equivalent e-reader that you like.

Once charged, Kindles can get more than a month of battery life. They can hold thousands of books, and one of those books is sure to appeal to you. Travel can be a good time to catch up on all the reading you’ve been meaning to do but haven’t gotten around to.

7. Fitbit

Just because you are travelling, doesn’t mean that you should neglect tracking your fitness! But the new Fitbits offer more features besides health-related ones that are useful for travel. Your Fitbit can access apps for weather forecasts, and flight status updates on selected airlines.

Using the gear on our list is sure to make your next trip much better!

The Most Popular Characters from DC Comics in Movies

DC comics have introduced some of the most beloved superhero characters to the world through their comics, and many of those heroes have made such a cultural impact that they have made their way onto the big screen in DC comic movies.

There will always be debate among fans around who are the most popular characters. Here are our picks for the top four most popular DC comics movie characters:

1. Batman

One of the reasons why Batman is so popular is because he is human, like his fans. No superpowers or abilities. No alien DNA. People respond to his humanity and how he has to learn and adapt just like anyone else.

The villains in his life are interesting and unique as well.

The best Batman movie was The Dark Knight, released in 2008. This movie explored heroism, evil and sacrifice in-depth, and set a new standard for comic book movies. Another element that made it the best Batman movie were the great performances, especially Heath Ledger who played the most terrifying portrayal of the villain The Joker.

2. Superman

Some would argue that his invulnerability to anything but Kryptonite and his almost one-dimensional goodness make for a dull superhero.

He could easily demand that people worship him, but that is not what he wants from humanity. He inspires hope by showing humanity that they have it within their power to stand up against evil.

The best Superman movie, Superman II, was made way back in 1980. It set the stage for superhero movie sequels. The sequel allows for a deeper look into Superman himself, and spends a great deal of time looking into the character of his villain, General Zod, making for a more well-rounded movie.

3. Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman’s superpowers include superhuman strength, the power of flight and enhanced senses.

Her drive to do good is what makes her popular. She feels it is her duty to use her abilities to help the world, and she does everything to fulfill that duty.

The best Wonder Woman movie came out in 2017, and was important because it had a female superhero lead, and the movie was also directed by a woman!

4. The Joker

We all have a fascination with evil characters. A part of us wants to live outside of the rules of society, so we enjoy how The Joker answers to no one.

There are many movies that feature The Joker without him being the main character. The best Joker movie that has The Joker as the main character is Joker, made in 2019 with Joaquin Phoenix. However, the best portrayal of The Joker was Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight.

Some new, upcoming DC movies include Wonder Woman and Batman again, with Wonder Woman 1984 (release: 2020), and The Batman (release 2021).

Other new DC movies are Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) (release: 2020) and Suicide Squad Sequel (release: 2021), which may produce even more popular characters!
